Shock didn’t even begin to cover how I felt as I stood in line waiting to make my way down the aisle. Seeing Alice had sent a wave of emotions through me the least of which was damn. When I had turned to see her standing there in a suit that fit in all the right places, I hadn’t known what to say. And when she had smiled and stuck her hand out, all I could think was how much I wanted to see her out of it. I felt gaudy and a little childish standing in front of her in a bridesmaid dress I didn’t like and flowers in my hair like I was some type of fairy.

I should have pushed back more.

Kelly had wanted the garden theme for her wedding and that desired aesthetic had extended to what we wore. For her, that translated to tiny diamond butterflies clipped onto her curls and a princess gown that shimmered every time she breathed. She looked breathtaking and when I had shed a small tear, that wasn’t an overreaction. Seeing her standing there radiant and full of happiness almost made up for the fact that I was now beside my ex-girlfriend as we waited for our cue to make an appearance.

“Janelle?”

I had to fight not to sigh when Monica quietly called my name. With a smile I did not feel, I glanced over at her. “What?”

It was unfair that even after having broken up with me, I could still look at her and find her attractive. Her slender frame was accentuated by a form-fitting suit, but I was happy to note that instead of dwelling on it, my mind compared Monica to Alice and found her lacking. All I could think about was how much better it would have been had I been on Alice’s arm as we walked in front of my friends and family.

The thought was startling but brought a genuine smile to my face. I had expected to feel upset at this point, and while it was certainly uncomfortable, overall, I felt okay. More than okay. The strongest emotion I felt was excitement about watching Kelly walk down the aisle and start her life with a man I knew loved her as much as she loved him. Everything else—the past relationship and new uncertain future with Monica—was unimportant by comparison.

Monica seemed taken aback by my abrupt reply. In the past, I would have immediately apologized and changed my tone. Now though, I let it stand. I didn’t care if it made Monica feel some type of way. I had promised to be civil for Kelly and I planned to keep that promise. But civility didn’t mean being extra nice or engaging when it wasn’t needed. I didn’t know what she intended to say because right when Monica opened her mouth to speak again, the processional music started, and everyone moved into position. I looked ahead pasting a smile on my face. I could feel Monica’s gaze on me, but I didn’t spare her another glance.
